چکیده
Abstract Pre-Holocene landslides and tsunami deposits are commonly observed on continental margins oceanic islands. However, scarce evidence has thus far linked pre-historic submarine to particular events. This work focuses an 839 km 3 landslide that occurred in the South China Sea at 0.54 Ma. Bathymetric restorations show paleoshoreline Ma was 180–580 south of its present-day location. In such a setting, triggered by able generate larger waves with shorter arrive times when compared equivalent landslide-generated under conditions. observation proves tsunamis generated during sea-level lowstands caused catastrophic damage coast past, so will do future lowstands. study stresses importance restoring paleoshorelines for detailed analysis historic tsunamis.

On the characteristics of landslide tsunamis
This review presents modelling techniques and processes that govern landslide tsunami generation, with emphasis on tsunamis induced by fully submerged landslides. The analysis focuses on a set of representative examples in simplified geometries demonstrating the main kinematic landslide parameters influencing initial tsunami amplitudes and wavelengths. Scaling relations from laboratory experime...
متن کاملSeismically generated tsunamis.
People around the world know more about tsunamis than they did 10 years ago, primarily because of two events: a tsunami on 26 December 2004 that killed more than 200,000 people around the shores of the Indian Ocean; and an earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan on 11 March 2011 that killed nearly 15,000 more and triggered a nuclear accident, with consequences that are still unfolding. Th...
متن کاملThe exposure of Sydney (Australia) to earthquake-generated tsunamis, storms and sea level rise: a probabilistic multi-hazard approach
Approximately 85% of Australia's population live along the coastal fringe, an area with high exposure to extreme inundations such as tsunamis. However, to date, no Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessments (PTHA) that include inundation have been published for Australia. This limits the development of appropriate risk reduction measures by decision and policy makers. We describe our PTHA underta...
متن کاملThe hydrodynamics of landslide tsunamis: current analytical models and future research directions
Landslide generated tsunamis are lesser-known yet equally destructive than earthquake tsunamis. Indeed, the highest tsunami wave recorded in recent history was generated by a landslide in Lituya Bay (Alaska, July 9, 1958) and produced runup in excess of 400 m. In this paper, we review the state of the art of landslide tsunami analytical modelling. Within the framework of a linearised shallowwat...
